Position as PhD student in sociology of religion, diversity and ethnicity at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland) – Application deadline 30th June

The Institute for the Social Sciences of Religions (ISSR) at the University of Lausanne is looking for a PhD student in sociology of religion, diversity and ethnicity.

You will work in a small motivated team on the creation and administration of the second wave of the National Congregation Study Switzerland (NCS II). This is a projet funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation on the diversity of local religious groups in Switzerland, across all religions, including both autochthonous and immigration groups. Collaborating partners are based at the University of Basel (CH), University of Strasbourg (F), and Duke University (USA).

The Institute for the Social Sciences of Religions (ISSR) is renowned for its expertise in the social sciences of religion, diversity and ethnicity. The University of Lausanne hosts FORS, the swiss centre of expertise in the social sciences. 

Expected start date in position : 1st October 2020 / to be agreed

Contract length : 4 years, non-renewable

Activity rate : 100%

Workplace : Lausanne – Dorigny

Your responsibilities:

100% of the activity rate will be dedicated to the completion of a doctoral thesis.

  • Supervision of student assistants who will work on creating lists of congregations
  • Creation, updating and pre-testing of the questionnaire
  • Contact with local religious groups, religious leaders, stakeholders
  • Preparation and overview of data collection phase
  • Data cleaning and data analysis
  • Organization of team meetings and collaboration
  • Creation of a website for the dissemination of results

Expected results

  • Doctoral thesis as part of the overall study on religious and ethnic diversity in Switzerland, under the supervision of Prof. J. Stolz
  • Publications in high quality journals as sole author or in collaboration

Your qualifications

  • Master in social sciences, study of religion, or related disciplines
  • Very good knowledge of quantitative methods
  • High motivation to work in a team
  • Excellent organizational skill
  • Languages: French, German, English
