Full Professorship (W2) in Cultural Sociology at the University of Lüneburg – Application deadline 8th September

The Fa­cul­ty of Hu­ma­nities and So­ci­al Sci­en­ces at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Lüne­burg in­vi­tes ap­p­li­ca­ti­ons for in­vit­ing ap­p­li­ca­ti­ons for the fol­lo­wing full Pro­fes­sor­ship in Cultural Sociology (W2).

With a so­cio­lo­gi­cal fo­cus, you in­ves­ti­ga­te the so­cio-cul­tu­ral con­sti­tu­ti­on of so­cie­ty and/or the con­sti­tu­ti­on of cul­tu­ral prac­tice and fiel­ds of cul­tu­ral pro­duc­tion. This ent­ails theo­re­ti­cal and theo­re­ti­cal-in­te­gra­ti­ve cont­ri­bu­ti­ons to cul­tu­ral and so­ci­al theo­ry. You have a broad know­ledge of the fiel­ds of cul­tu­ral so­cio­lo­gy or so­cio­lo­gy of cul­tu­re and a sound back­ground in his­to­ri­cal and con­tem­pora­ry as well as in­ter­na­tio­nal­ly re­le­vant so­cio­lo­gi­cal ap­proa­ches and theo­ries. Your re­se­arch con­nects to im­portant con­texts of cul­tu­ral re­se­arch such as di­gi­tal cul­tu­res and re­se­arch on me­dia cul­tu­res, sci­ence and tech­no­lo­gy stu­dies, cul­tu­ral stu­dies and cul­tu­ral ana­ly­sis, his­to­ry of sci­ence and tech­no­lo­gy, or­ga­niza­t­i­on stu­dies, mo­bi­li­ty, mi­gra­ti­on and post­co­lo­ni­al stu­dies, gen­der and queer stu­dies, vi­su­al stu­dies or aes­t­he­tic theo­re­ti­cal tra­di­ti­ons. In ad­di­ti­on, you can de­mons­tra­te me­tho­do­lo­gi­cal ex­per­ti­se, par­ti­cu­lar­ly in the field of qua­li­ta­ti­ve me­thods (e.g. eth­no­gra­phic me­thods or text, image and dis­cour­se ana­ly­sis), as well as an in­te­rest in mi­xed me­thods and ne­wer di­gi­tal me­thods.

In teaching you are able to si­gni­fi­cant­ly cont­ri­bu­te to so­ci­al sci­ence per­spec­tives on cul­tu­ral re­se­arch, in clo­se co­ope­ra­ti­on with the other so­cio­lo­gi­cal pro­fes­sor­ships and ju­ni­or pro­fes­sor­ships at the In­sti­tu­te of So­cio­lo­gy and Cul­tu­ral Or­ga­niza­t­i­on. Ba­sed on your ca­pa­ci­ty for in­ter­di­sci­pli­na­ry re­se­arch, your work is clo­sed re­la­ted to ques­ti­ons and pro­blems of cul­tu­ral theo­ry whi­le streng­the­ning ap­proa­ches of cul­tu­ral so­cio­lo­gy and/?or so­cio­lo­gy of cul­tu­re. Your re­se­arch of­fers op­por­tu­nities for the joint de­ve­lop­ment of ex­ter­nal­ly fun­ded pro­jects, pre­fe­r­a­b­ly in con­junc­tion with im­pul­ses for the in­ter­na­tio­na­liza­t­i­on of re­se­arch and cor­re­spon­ding re­se­arch net­works. You sha­re the idea of the uni­ver­si­ty as a Bil­dungs­ge­mein­schaft (com­mu­ni­ty of edu­ca­ti­on) and ac­tive­ly pur­sue the pos­si­bi­li­ties of re­se­arch co­ope­ra­ti­on wi­t­hin the Fa­cul­ty of Hu­ma­nities and So­ci­al Sci­en­ces and its re­se­arch foci on di­gi­tal cul­tu­res, cul­tu­res of cri­tique and cul­tu­ral or­ga­niza­t­i­on, and/?or with other fa­cul­ties of the uni­ver­si­ty. Ide­al­ly, you can de­mons­tra­te your ex­pe­ri­ence in working wi­t­hin cul­tu­re-theo­re­ti­cal, in­ter­di­sci­pli­na­ry re­se­arch con­texts.

It is ex­pec­ted that you are in­vol­ved in, and si­gni­fi­cant­ly cont­ri­bu­te to, na­tio­nal and in­ter­na­tio­nal de­ba­tes in your fiel­ds of re­se­arch. You are able to de­mons­tra­te this through high-qua­li­ty pu­bli­ca­ti­ons in re­le­vant re­se­arch jour­nals and with aca­de­mi­cal­ly re­le­vant pu­blis­hers. You have re­le­vant teaching ex­pe­ri­ence and en­joy teaching in in­ter­di­sci­pli­na­ry con­texts. In ad­di­ti­on, you have ac­qui­red ex­pe­ri­ence in in­itia­ting ex­ter­nal­ly fun­ded pro­jects and in aca­de­mic self-ad­mi­nis­tra­ti­on. You are able and wil­ling to play an ac­tive role in in­ter­di­sci­pli­na­ry re­se­arch in­itia­ti­ves. To be en­ga­ged in com­mu­ni­ca­ting re­se­arch fin­dings to the ge­ne­ral pu­blic is an ob­vious part of your scho­lar­ship.

In ad­di­ti­on, you have gai­ned in­ter­na­tio­nal ex­pe­ri­ence in re­se­arch and teaching, and you en­ga­ge in in­ter­na­tio­nal re­se­arch net­works. You have a very good know­ledge of the Eng­lish lan­gua­ge and are pre­pa­red to teach cour­ses in Eng­lish. If you have no Ger­man lan­gua­ge skills, you are ex­pec­ted to be wil­ling to ac­qui­re suf­fi­ci­ent Ger­man lan­gua­ge skills wi­t­hin a re­a­sonable pe­ri­od of time.

The em­ploy­ment re­qui­re­ments are go­ver­ned by § 25 of the Uni­ver­si­ties Act of Lo­wer Sa­x­o­ny (Nie­dersäch­si­sches Hoch­schul­ge­setz, NHG) and in­clu­de:
* a successfully completed university degree;
* a special ability to engage in independent scholarly work, as demonstrated by having received an above-average grade for your doctoral degree relevant to the profile of the professorship;
* additional academic achievements, usually achieved in the course of being an assistant professor, your postdoctoral qualification (habilitation) or other achievements recognized as being equivalent to a postdoctoral qualification (e.g., a respective publication record);
* a pedagogical-didactic aptitude as demonstrated through experience and the use of innovative teaching methods.

This po­si­ti­on is re­mu­n­e­ra­ted on sala­ry sca­le W2 (uni­ver­si­ty pro­fes­sor). For first time ap­point­ments, the po­si­ti­on will be li­mi­ted in­iti­al­ly to five ye­ars. For ap­p­li­cants who al­re­a­dy have a uni­ver­si­ty ap­point­ment at the W2 or W3 le­vel, a life­time ap­point­ment is pos­si­ble. This ap­p­lies in in­di­vi­du­al ca­ses to first-time ap­point­ments as well.

Leu­pha­na is stri­ving to in­crea­se its pro­por­ti­on of fe­ma­le pro­fes­sors. Ex­cel­lent op­por­tu­nities are avail­able to sup­port wo­men in their aca­de­mic ca­re­ers. Qua­li­fied wo­men are, the­re­fo­re, par­ti­cu­lar­ly in­vi­ted to ap­p­ly. Ap­p­li­cants with a disa­bi­li­ty will be gi­ven prio­ri­ty in ac­cor­dance with the ap­p­lica­ble sta­tu­to­ry pro­vi­si­ons.
