CfP: Int. Congress „Cities of the Global South. Politics. Imaginaries and Cultural Practices“ at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City in cooperation with the University of Tübingen – Deadline for Abstracts 2nd March

The Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, the Instituto de Investigaciones Filológicas, Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas of the UNAM (Mexico), and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Global South Studies of the Eberhard Karls Universität of Tübingen, welcome proposals for the int. Congress „Cities of the Global South. Politics, Imaginaries and Cultural Practices. The conference takes place from 8th-10th September 2020.

The city is a persistent question that continues to transcend disciplines. No city is static, and cities around the world are subject to great forces of social, economic and environmental change. These changes relate to the dynamics imposed by the increasingly limited resources available for urban life. Likewise, it is important to consider that the future of humanity will be enacted on an urban stage, in a world where, for decades now, the cities of the Global South have led the world in terms of growth. As a result, traditional conceptions of the city no longer suffice when it comes to comprehending contemporary cities and their challenges. Faced with a growing epistemic challenge that seems irresolvable, reflecting on the city from the Global South poses an even greater issue: how are cities of the South conceived, constructed, experienced, represented and consumed?

From their inception, urban studies have centered their attention on urban spaces generated by the Industrial Revolution, mainly in Europe and North America, and relegated other experiences marked by alternative ways of making a city. However, it should not be thought that the cities of the Global South are characterized only by extreme poverty, violence and lack of services. Reflecting on our cities helps us understand that these urban characteristics (including poverty and informality) are global. Cities of the Global South. Politics, Imaginaries and Cultural Practices seeks to integrate dialogues from various disciplines interested in reflecting on the city as a laboratory of human, cultural, social and environmental experiences.
