The Leibniz Science Campus „Europe and America in the Modern World“ is offering up to six scholarships for new doctoral researchers lasting a maximum of three and a half years. The scholarships are worth 1,500 EUR per month and will start on 1 March 2020. They will be awarded for an initial 18 months with an extension of two years granted following a progress assessment.
We invite applications from candidates who have completed a Master’s degree (or equivalent), or are close to completing such a degree, with a very good grade in a discipline relevant to the research profile of the Regensburg Leibniz ScienceCampus. The LSC welcomes proposals for doctoral projects that examine the frictions, tensions and multifaceted transformations of globality since around 1800. Projects should explore transatlantic interconnections and exchanges, or offer comparative perspectives on phenomena affecting (parts of) both Europe and America. Projects should be relevant to at least one of the following four Interdisciplinary Research Modules that form the core research profile of the LSC.
The modules are:
1. Transatlantic Political Transformations
2. Cultures and Hierarchies of Translation
3. Transatlantic Trade and Institutions
4. Practices of Belonging (Verheimatlichung)
We also invite proposals that explore the production of knowledge in the field area studies. More details about the Regensburg LSC and the modules can be found at www.europeamerica.de.
The deadline for applications is 17 November 2019. Applications must be submitted electronically via the IOS application portal at http://www.leibniz-ios.de/en/vacancies.html. Applications made by email will not be considered.
Applications must include the following in English or German:
– a covering letter (max. 1 page) outlining your motivation for applying;
– a CV – including a list of publications if applicable;
– copies/scans of degree certificates and grade transcripts, including any language certificates;
– an outline of your proposed doctoral project (6-8 pages, including a concise bibliography and suggestion for a potential supervisor at IOS or the University of Regensburg);
– a detailed schedule outlining a plan of your doctoral studies over a maximum of three and a half years;
– a one-page abstract of your master’s thesis (or equivalent);
– two reference letters from university lecturers or professors.
Any applicant yet to complete a Master’s degree (or equivalent) should include a note from their current supervisor or course leader confirming that you will have completed your degree by 1 March 2020, the start date of the doctoral programme.
In order to make the most of the doctoral program offered by the Leibniz ScienceCampus in Regensburg, candidates should have at least working knowledge of both English and German. Doctoral researchers will be offered opportunities to further develop language skills as part of the program. The opportunity to conduct research and undertake fellowships abroad is part of the program. Scholarship holders will be expected to live and work in Regensburg or its vicinity.
Applications will be assessed by a selection committee made up of the LSC Board of Directors and members of its Steering Committee. Selected candidates will be invited for interviews that are expected to take place in Regensburg or via Skype in the week beginning 9 December 2019.
